The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has officially opened applications for the 2025 academic year. This crucial initiative provides bursaries and student loans to deserving South African students pursuing higher education at universities and TVET colleges.

The bursary covers tuition, registration fees, living allowances, personal care, transport, and accommodation.

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, launched the NSFAS 2025 application period, emphasizing the scheme's importance in providing accessible education to South African youth.

NSFAS is the only tool we have at our disposal for the total liberation of the children of historically disadvantaged people in our country.

Applications are open from 20 September to 15 December 2024. Students can apply online and must upload all required documents for consideration.

NSFAS has been instrumental in supporting over 1.2 million students in 2024, ensuring a skilled workforce for the country. The government's commitment to expanding funding options is evident through initiatives like the Comprehensive Student Funding Model, which introduced student loans for middle-income families.

This demonstrated the role that the scheme has played in trying to change the structural, colonial apartheid system that we have inherited. Those legacies persist in the 30 years of our democracy.

"As we gradually implement our comprehensive funding model, we will continue to work with all funding stakeholders to ensure we consolidate this bursary scheme to ensure that we have a consolidated and efficient loan and bursary system in South Africa."

Work on other bursary scholarship funding in the university sector shows that 161,292 students in the public university system receive bursaries from sources other than NSFAS.

NSFAS Requirements

South African citizens and Permanent Residents with a combined household income of less than R350,000 per annum are eligible. Sassa grant recipients qualify automatically.
