The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers financial assistance to South African students enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. This assistance includes bursaries and loans for tuition, registration fees, and living expenses.

What Does 'Provisionally Funded' Mean?

If your NSFAS application status is 'Provisionally Funded,' it means that you've been approved for funding, but NSFAS is still waiting for your registration details from your institution. Once you've registered for the academic year, your funding will be confirmed.

Availability of Funds

NSFAS's funding is subject to the availability of funds. If the budget allows, you'll receive comprehensive funding. In recent years, NSFAS has been able to fund all approved applicants.

Eligibility for NSFAS Funding

To qualify for an NSFAS bursary, you must be a South African citizen or permanent resident with a household income of less than R350,000 per year. SASSA grant recipients are automatically eligible.

If you don't meet the bursary criteria, you may be eligible for an NSFAS loan if your family's income is between R350,000 and R600,000 annually.
