The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) provides comprehensive study bursaries to students from poor and working-class backgrounds in South Africa.
Nsfas bursaries ensure deserving students can obtain tertiary education qualifications from public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
A Nsfas bursary will cover a student's tuition and accommodation fees. Students will also receive a meal allowance, transportation allowance and a stationery allowance.
The Nsfas bursary application period for the 2023 academic year opened at the end of September 2022. To date, Nsfas received more than 230,000 bursary applications from students.
However, several students who applied for funding have been rejected by Nsfas. One of the reasons Nsfas provided unsuccessful applicants was “DHA Error”.
What To Do About A ‘DHA Error’ NSFAS Status
Nsfas has indicated that if a bursary applicant received this rejection message it means that the bursary scheme was unable to find the student on the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) database.
While most of the rejection status from Nsfas can be appealed directly with Nsfas, It's important to note that the “DHA Error” status cannot be appealed.
Nsfas said students who received this rejection status should contact the Department of Home Affairs to correct this error.
The Nsfas application period for funding for the 2023 academic year will close on 31 January 2023. Students are encouraged to submit bursary applications before this important deadline.
