The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a bursary that goes beyond covering tuition fees, the bursary funds the dreams of students.
NSFAS offers bursaries to students who wish to study at one of South Africa’s 26 public universities or 50 TVET colleges. Therefore, students who currently study at or hope to attend Sefako Makgatho University (SMU) are funded by NSFAS.
As long as students study a full-time undergraduate course at SMU and meet the requirements, they will receive funding from NSFAS.
The bursary covers the cost of tuition fees, registration, learning materials, transport, accommodation and other living expenses.
The requirements for the NSFAS bursary are as follows:
- South African citizen or permanent resident.
- All Sassa grant recipients are eligible to apply.
- Combined household income of R350 000 or less per annum.
- Persons with disabilities with a combined household income of no more than R600 000 per year.
- Students who began studying before 2018 whose household income is no more than R122 000 per year.
NSFAS aims to ensure that all deserving students achieve their dreams and are not held back by their financial circumstances.
The bursary administers funding, on behalf of the Department of Higher Education, Science and Technology, to potential professionals from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds who can not afford study fees.
