The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government initiative designed to assist financially disadvantaged South African students with funding for tertiary education. Many applicants have questioned whether they need to pay for their NSFAS application.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides NSFAS funding to students at public universities and TVET Colleges. However, some students have found themselves being scammed while undertaking the NSFAS application process.

NSFAS strongly warns against anyone charging fees for applications. The entire application process for NSFAS funding is completely free.

Applicants are advised not to pay any fee to anyone to assist with NSFAS applications.  

Applicants are also warned to never share their personal details, login credentials, or passwords with anyone. NSFAS officials will never request this information.

It is also important for applicants not to share their personal details. NSFAS Employees will never ask you to share your login details/passwords.  

Applications are strictly online and can only be submitted through the official NSFAS website. Be cautious of any other platforms claiming to offer NSFAS applications.

How To Apply For NSFAS

  1. Create a myNsfas account 
    • If you have an existing myNsfas account, click on 'login' when going to myNsfas and complete your information
    • If you don't have a myNsfas account, click on 'Create account'
  2. Log into your myNsfas account
  3. Click on 'Apply'
  4. Answer the questions on the screen
  5. If necessary upload any supporting documents (often you don't have to!)
  6. Click on 'Submit'
  7. You will then receive an application reference number
