Need funding for your studies in South Africa? The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial support to eligible students enrolled at public universities and TVET colleges.
Here's everything you need to know about NSFAS funding, including allowances for August 2024.
What is NSFAS funding?
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries (financial aid you don't need to repay) and student loans to deserving students. This funding helps cover the costs of higher education, including:
- Tuition fees: No more worrying about upfront costs to attend university.
- Registration fees: Get started on your studies without registration fee hurdles.
- Monthly allowances: Receive financial support for accommodation, food, transportation, and learning materials through NSFAS allowances
How much funding can I get?
NSFAS allowances vary depending on whether you're a university or TVET college student. Here's a breakdown:
University Students:
- Living allowance: R16,500 per year (includes R3,045 for personal care and R13,455 for meals).
- Learning material allowance: Up to R5,460 to cover your course textbooks and study materials.
TVET College Students:
- Living allowance: R10,000 per year to help with living expenses.
- Learning material allowance: This amount varies depending on your specific course requirements.
Additional Support for Students with Disabilities:
NSFAS recognizes the unique needs of students with disabilities. They offer higher living allowances and adjusted learning material allowances to ensure equal access to education.
August 2024 Allowances
- Living allowance breakdown:
- Meal allowance: R1,345
- Personal care allowance: Approximately R300 (for students in catered accommodation)
- Transport allowance: If you live more than 10km from campus, you can qualify for a travel allowance of R7,718 per year (up to R771 per month). This allowance is usually paid directly to you, unless your institution arranges your transportation.
How will I receive my allowance in August?
Previously, universities were responsible for distributing allowances until July 2024. However, NSFAS recently announced that universities will continue managing allowance payments for the remainder of the 2024 academic year.
NSFAS will allocate funds directly to universities, who will then distribute them to students.
TVET College students will receive their NSFAS allowances straight to their bank accounts.
