In 2024, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is set to increase the NSFAS allowances allocated to funded students. This enhancement encompasses allowances for university students, as well as those attending Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, and extends to students engaged in distance learning programs.
Under the umbrella of NSFAS's comprehensive financial support, sponsored students receive various NSFAS allowances. These encompass coverage for transportation, living expenses, educational materials, and even accommodation costs.
It's important to note, however, that students enrolled in distance learning institutions such as the University of South Africa (Unisa) do not qualify for all these allowances. This is due to the distinct nature of distance learning, which doesn't incur the same expenses as traditional in-person education.
Here’s How Much NSFAS Allowances For Unisa Students
Allowances for students in distance education programmes are calculated based on the number of courses registered up to a maximum of R5,460.
Distance University students studying an equivalent full-time course credit load qualify for the personal care allowance of R3,045 per academic year.
This requires a student to be registered for a minimum of 120-course credits in one academic year.
