Students approved for the Nsfas bursary receive registration fees, tuition and a number of allowances. However, the amount of each allowance differs depending on which tertiary institution they attend.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) provides its student beneficiaries with monthly allowances to help cover the costs that come with studying tertiary education.

These allowances include transport, accommodation, living allowances and a few others, depending on which tertiary institution the student attends.

However regarding student accommodation/residence, there are certain fees that Nsfas does not cover, such as the deposit fee of a private residence.

Nsfas does pay for these types of accommodation:

  1. Institution owned off-campus residences
  2. Institution owned on-campus residences
  3. Institution leased private accommodation
  4. Private off-campus accredited accommodation
  5. Accredited private residences

All institution owned or leased, as well as private accommodation, will be capped at R45,000 per academic year. Private accommodation allowances will be required to be paid directly to private accommodation service providers by Nsfas or institutions.

Students living in institution-catered accommodation qualify for a maximum allowance capped at R60,750 per annum (accommodation allowance that is inclusive of the living allowance and personal care).
