The new academic year is just around the corner, and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is gearing up for 2025. A key question on many students' minds is: When will the allowances be paid and how much will it be?
While specific allowance amounts for 2025 haven't been confirmed yet, NSFAS has commenced with arrangements for 2025 NSFAS allowance payments.
NSFAS Allowances For January
To ensure a smooth start to the academic year, especially for Health Science students who begin their studies earlier, NSFAS has allocated a significant portion of its budget.
A total of R3.7 billion will be disbursed to universities in January 2025. Additionally, TVET colleges will receive R640 million for tuition fees.
It's crucial to remember that NSFAS doesn't typically pay allowances in January. The usual payment schedule involves ten monthly installments, starting from February and ending in November.
However, Health Science students may receive early payments to accommodate their earlier academic calendar.
Institutions must submit accurate student registration information to NSFAS to avoid delays in allowance payments.
The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education is urging the resolution of issues from the 2024 registration period, including delayed applications, disbursements, appeals, and accommodation challenges. The committee is also pushing for standardized allowances across all universities and TVET colleges.
