The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced that university students will receive their allowances in September 2024. This confirmation comes amidst ongoing discussions about a new allowance payment system.

NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to eligible learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. These funds cover tuition, registration fees, and various allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

September 2024 NSFAS Allowance Disbursement

In April 2024, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) announced that universities would be responsible for paying student allowances until the end of July. However, the scheme later extended this arrangement to the end of the year.

Following a meeting between Universities South Africa (USAF) and the NSFAS Administrator, Mr F Nomvalo, NSFAS has decided that university students' allowances will continue to be distributed allowances through universities for the remainder of the 2024 academic year.

Continuing in September 2024, universities will continue to be responsible for paying student allowances. NSFAS will allocate funds to these institutions based on valid student registration data.

Universities must ensure that they provide accurate student registration information to NSFAS. This is crucial to guarantee that all eligible students receive their NSFAS allowance payments without delay.

Updates on the New Allowance Payment System

In May, NSFAS Administrator Freeman Nomvalo announced that a new system for allowance payments would be fully developed by September 2024. While it remains unclear if this timeline will be maintained, the scheme's decision to continue university-managed payments adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

This means NSFAS will disburse allowances to institutions, which will then distribute them to students, until the end of the 2024 academic year. The pilot accommodation process remains unchanged.

NSFAS said, "Institutions are urged to validate student data before disbursing allowances to ensure accuracy".
