The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed funding eligibility for learners enrolled in Occupational Programmes at public TVET Colleges. This announcement broadens access to financial aid, making these practical programs a more realistic option for deserving students.

NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as  several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.

What are Occupational Programmes?

These intensive programmes provide hands-on learning in specific trades and professions. Ideal for learners who prefer a practical approach, Occupational Programmes typically range from 25 credits and can include Learnerships, Apprenticeships, and Skills Programmes.

Examples include hairdressing, early childhood development, automotive repair, or electronics.

NSFAS Eligibility for Occupational Programmes

To qualify for NSFAS funding in an Occupational Programme, students must be South African citizens registered at a public TVET College and demonstrate financial need with a household income below R350 000 per year.

How NSFAS Funding Works

While NSFAS traditionally covers full tuition for qualifying students, funding for living expenses differs slightly for Occupational Programmes. Learners may be eligible for allowances for accommodation, travel, personal needs, and learning materials during simulated training periods.

However, if the program offers a stipend through an employment contract, additional NSFAS allowances for living expenses might not be available.

This update by NSFAS is a significant step in promoting accessible and affordable career training for South African youth seeking to enter the workforce with valuable skills.
