Students receiving financial aid through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) can expect a smoother disbursement process for their allowances. Following disbursement issues earlier this year, NSFAS has had to put in temporary measures to make sure students can still receive their NSFAS allowances.
TVET students can now receive their allowances directly deposited into their personal bank accounts by uploading bank details on the myNSFAS portal.
"Students must provide information that is accurate so that the system can accept the information they submit ... some students submit parents' bank accounts and this creates problems in terms of verification and we urge all students to open their own bank accounts," said the NSFAS Administrator, Freeman Nomvalo during a press briefing on Monday morning.
To minimize disruptions, NSFAS partnered with universities to handle allowance payments until July 2024.
Now, the NSFAS Adminstator announced that NSFAS is developing a new, unified allowance payment system for both universities and TVET colleges. This system is expected to be fully operational by September 2024.
Direct Payment System Scrapped
In 2022, NSFAS introduced a Direct Payment solution facilitated by fintech service providers. This system aimed to pay allowances directly to students using a dedicated NSFAS bank account. Unfortunately, this method resulted in several challenges:
- Delays in Allowances: Many students experienced delays in receiving their monthly allowances.
- High Bank Charges: Students were burdened with unexpected and exorbitant bank charges associated with the NSFAS bank account.
Recognizing these issues, NSFAS is transitioning to a more efficient and student-friendly system.
Nomvalo emphasized his commitment to ensuring on-time allowance disbursements for students and timely payments to accommodation providers.
This improved system aims to create a more stable and predictable learning environment for all NSFAS beneficiaries.
