The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is on track to release funding decisions for both NSFAS appeals and loan applications in the coming weeks, according to Administrator Freeman Nomvalo.
Nomvalo, appointed in April 2024 to oversee NSFAS following the dissolution of the board, provided an update on the scheme’s progress during a recent media briefing.
NSFAS Appeals Update
Addressing the backlog of unresolved NSFAS appeals, Nomvalo highlighted the significant progress made since taking office. The number of pending appeals has dropped from 88,000 to approximately 27,000.
While new appeals continue to be lodged, NSFAS is committed to resolving all outstanding cases by the end of August 2024.
NSFAS Loan Applications
Nomvalo explained that many students who did not qualify for a bursary were eligible to apply for a NSFAS loan. However, a considerable number of students created profiles on the myNSFAS system but failed to complete the full loan application process.
NSFAS has finalized loan application decisions and will communicate the outcomes to students shortly. The scheme emphasizes its commitment to timely communication and ensuring students have all the necessary information.
