The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a lifeline for many South African students, providing bursaries and loans to help them pursue higher education. On 20 September, NSFAS 2025 applications opened and will be closing on 15 December.
NSFAS Spokesperson, Ishmael Mnisi, previously said that NSFAS will prioritize funding decisions for Sassa recipients and first-time entering students. He also revealed that they hope to finalise all NSFAS funding decisions by 31 December 2024.
However, matric results will only be released on 16 January 2025 which could delay confirmation of 2025 NSFAS funding decisions.
It was agreed in our engagement that NSFAS is the main factor of instabilities in our institutions of Higher Learning. However, this is linked to delays in releasing matric examination results which then translates to delays in funding decisions.
Once NSFAS reviews your application and determines you're eligible for funding, you'll need to be officially enrolled in your course for your NSFAS funding to be finalized. If your status says "Provisionally Funded - Funded Subject To Registration And Availability Of Funds," it means you've been pre-approved, but your funding will be confirmed once you're registered.

- Once you register, your funding will be confirmed.
Check your NSFAS status regularly on the myNSFAS portal. Be patient, as the NSFAS process can be lengthy.
