NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical And Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. The funding covers tuition and registration fees, alongside allowances for accommodation, food, and learning materials.
University Students: Matric Required
For university courses, matric is a mandatory requirement. NSFAS funding for university students primarily supports those enrolling in degree programmes where matriculation is needed for admission.
TVET College Students: Alternative Pathways
However, matric is not always required for students enrolling in approved TVET college programmes. NSFAS funds Ministerial-approved courses at TVET colleges, many of which accept students without a matric qualification.
Funded programmes at TVET colleges include:
- Engineering Studies: Courses such as National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF levels 2–4, and Report 191 programmes (N1 to N6) in fields like Civil Engineering Construction, Electrical Infrastructure, Information Technology & Computer Science, and Engineering & Related Design.
- Business and Utility Studies: Courses covering Management, Marketing, Finance, Office Administration, Tourism, Hospitality, Safety in Society, Education & Development, Transport & Logistics, and more. These include National Certificate (Vocational) and Report 191 programmes at NQF levels 2–4 and N1 to N6.
- Pre-Learning Programmes (PLP): Some preparatory courses are also eligible for NSFAS funding.
Broadening Access to Education
Many TVET college programmes funded by NSFAS do not require matric as a prerequisite, making higher education more accessible to learners without traditional qualifications. Prospective students are encouraged to consult individual TVET colleges for details on programme offerings and entry requirements.
By supporting both university and TVET college students, NSFAS continues to provide pathways to education and skills development for South Africa’s youth.
