The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), a critical lifeline for many South African students, has outlined its allowance payment plan for February 2025.

NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. NSFAS funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

NSFAS allowances are distributed over 10 monthly payments during the academic year, which typically spans from February to November. No payments are made outside of this period.

Allowance Payment Channels Confirmed

In 2024, university students received their allowances through their respective institutions, while Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College students received theirs via direct deposits into their personal bank accounts.

For the 2025 academic year, NSFAS has confirmed that TVET College students will continue to receive their allowances directly into their bank accounts. Students are encouraged to update their banking details through the myNSFAS portal. New NSFAS-qualifying TVET College students are advised to open a bank account with any South African banking institution to ensure smooth payments.

However, the planned transition for university students to receive allowances directly into their bank accounts has been delayed due to an ongoing court case. Until further notice, universities will continue to manage the disbursement of allowances for their students. NSFAS has acknowledged that institutions may have varying policies on how and when allowances are paid, creating some inconsistencies.

NSFAS has urged students to reach out to their respective institutions to confirm the specifics of their allowance payments.

Students are advised to consult their institution to determine when and how they will receive their allowances
