The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is on the hunt for qualified individuals to join its board of directors. This comes as the scheme prepares to oversee the distribution of funds to approximately one million tertiary students.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and loans to eligible students enrolled in accredited universities and TVET colleges. This financial aid covers tuition, registration fees, and essential living costs such as food, accommodation, and study materials.
A recent amendment to the NSFAS administration has accelerated the timeline for appointing a new board. The previous administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, was initially set to serve for two years, but this term could now end by the end of 2024.
Qualifications and Diversity
To be considered for a board position, candidates must hold a Master’s degree and possess a strong track record in fields like finance, law, ethics, economics, science, public administration, governance, engineering, or higher education.
NSFAS emphasizes the importance of a diverse board that reflects the South African population. The scheme seeks individuals with a deep understanding of the higher education sector and its role in national development.
Call for Nominations and Student Response
Nominations for the NSFAS board are open for 21 days following the publication of this notice. Interested candidates can submit their CVs and a letter of consent to NSFAS.
The Economic Freedom Fighters Students' Command (EFFSC) has welcomed the call for nominations but criticized past appointment processes as opaque and susceptible to corruption. The student body is demanding public interviews for all nominees and encourages qualified individuals to apply.
