The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) embarked on a provincial roadshow tour to address concerns surrounding student accommodation and improve the overall experience for NSFAS-funded students. The initiative kicked off in KwaZulu-Natal on 7 August 2024.
NSFAS has acknowledged receiving complaints about delayed or unpaid accommodation allowance payments, which have negatively impacted some students. To mitigate these challenges, NSFAS announced plans to enhance accommodation arrangements for students receiving financial aid.
The roadshows served as a platform for NSFAS to engage directly with landlords who house NSFAS-funded students. This initiative builds on the success of a pilot project aimed at improving student accommodation standards.
During the sessions, participants discussed the challenges faced by landlords and explored potential solutions to enhance the accommodation system for the 2025 academic year. Sibongile Mncwabe, from the Department of Higher Education, emphasized NSFAS' commitment to the success of this student accommodation project.
They stressed the importance of maintaining opportunities for engagement, stating, "It would be a sad day if that opportunity is lost."
NSFAS Administrator, Freeman Nomwalo, expressed appreciation for the growing number of women entering the student accommodation business. She also highlighted the critical importance of student safety in private accommodation, urging providers to adhere to the Department of Higher Education and Training's safety standards.
It is important for accommodation providers to load and accredit their properties to receive official communications.
The roadshow continued to the Western Cape in August, where accommodation providers expressed concerns about communication challenges. In the Free State, Nomvalo addressed various topics, including the importance of collaboration between providers and NSFAS, the role of ICT systems, and ensuring safe and conducive living environments for students.
Not every accommodation is suitable for students.
The roadshows provided a valuable opportunity for accommodation providers to raise concerns such as late payments and accreditation discrepancies. The initiative concluded with stops in North West, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and Limpopo provinces, where similar issues were discussed and solutions proposed.
NSFAS is actively working to improve its communication channels with accredited accommodation providers. The scheme is also establishing a dedicated helpline and email support system for student accommodation inquiries, with a team available around the clock.
