The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced the allowance amounts for university students in November 2024. NSFAS provides comprehensive financial assistance in the form of  bursaries and student loans  to deserving learners studying at universities and TVET colleges.

University Student Allowances

University students will receive an annual living allowance of R16,500. This includes R3,045 for personal care and R13,455 for meals. Additionally, they are eligible for a learning material allowance of up to R5,460.

Students with disabilities will be eligible for higher allowances and additional support for learning materials.

The allowance amounts may vary based on the number of modules a student is registered for and whether they are studying at a distance learning institution like Unisa.

Payment Schedule

Allowances will be divided into ten instalments throughout the year. In November 2024, for example, students will receive a meal allowance of R1,345. Those in catered accommodation will also receive a personal care allowance of approximately R300.

Direct Payments from Universities

NSFAS has confirmed that universities will be responsible for paying student allowances for the remainder of the 2024 academic year. This means that students registered at one of South Africa's 26 public universities will receive allowance payments directly from their institution.

Support for Students

Students experiencing issues with allowance payments are encouraged to visit their university's financial office for assistance.
