The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has been hard at work processing applications for the 2025 academic year. Towards the end of November, over 442 000 students have been provisionally funded for next year, pending registration and fund availability.

NSFAS applications opened on 20 September 2024, and will close on 15 December 2024
Application Progress
- Over 500,000 applications have been assessed for financial and academic eligibility.
- Over 100,000 applications have been verified for completeness.
- Over 2,000 applications have been reviewed to confirm student type, SASSA status, and other relevant details.
- Over 12,000 applications have been rejected, and 1,300 appeals have been lodged.
- Over 15,000 applications have been canceled.
So far, NSFAS has received 18,390 loan applications for 2025.
465,509 applications have been received from SASSA beneficiaries while 142,179 applications from non-SASSA beneficiaries are still being processed.
"As at 20 November 2024, 428 906 of these Sassa students were provisionally funded," said NSFAS.
To date, about 70 000 of these applications have been reviewed for verification purposes. Over 50 000 of these requires additional documents and 13 173 non-SASSA students were provisionally funded.
NSFAS Application Status Check
To check the status of your NSFAS application:
- Log in to the myNSFAS Student Portal: This is your main portal for all NSFAS-related activities.
- Enter Credentials: Use your username and password to access your account.
- Track Funding Progress: Click on "Track Your Funding Progress" to view the latest updates on your application.
NSFAS aims to finalize all applications by January 31, 2025. Once matric results are released on January 14, 2025, the scheme will finalize funding for provisionally funded students who have secured a place at an institution.
To expedite the application process, NSFAS has increased its workforce:
- 29 full-time staff members
- 183 additional staff members
- 50 additional graduate staff members
- 24 servicing administrators deployed across 76 institutions
By taking these steps, NSFAS is working diligently to ensure a smooth application process and timely funding decisions for students across South Africa.
