The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to eligible students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. This financial aid covers tuition and registration fees, as well as allowances for essential living expenses.

NSFAS allowances help students manage essential costs while they work toward their qualifications. Here’s an overview of how Unisa students will receive their NSFAS allowances.

The government bursary scheme confirmed that universities will continue to disburse allowances through the end of the year.

November 2024 NSFAS Allowance Payments for Unisa Students

Initially, universities were responsible for disbursing allowances only until the end of July. However, NSFAS recently extended this arrangement, allowing universities, including Unisa, to continue payments through December.

For November 2024, Unisa students will receive their allowances directly from their universities.

NSFAS Support for Unisa Students

Unisa students funded by NSFAS are eligible for a Learning Materials Allowance and a Living Allowance.

The Learning Materials Allowance depends on the number of modules a student is enrolled in. Unisa students receive R700 per module for the first four modules, and a one-time payment of R5,460 if they are registered for five or more modules.

If a student has already received R5,200 for the first five modules, no additional learning materials allowance will be provided for any extra modules. This allowance is intended to cover textbooks and other essential study materials.

Living Allowances are available to students registered for ten or more modules. Additionally, Unisa provides an incidental allowance for students enrolled in ten or more modules.

Beyond these allowances, NSFAS also covers tuition and registration fees for eligible students.
