The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides comprehensive bursaries and loans to deserving students enrolled in approved programs at universities and TVET colleges, which includes monthly NSFAS allowances to cover essential student needs.

NSFAS  is a crucial resource for many South African students, offering financial support that allows them to pursue higher education. As part of its benefits, NSFAS offers monthly allowances that help cover living expenses, accommodation, transportation, and study materials.

For students at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, NSFAS has announced its allowance payment plan for the remainder of the year, detailing how these payments will be made.

NSFAS Allowances for TVET College Students

NSFAS provides several types of allowances for TVET college students, including:

  • Personal Care Allowance: This is given to all NSFAS-funded students.
  • Transport Allowance: For students living within 40km of their college, NSFAS covers transport costs.
  • Accommodation Allowance: NSFAS also covers tuition and registration fees for eligible students.

Payment of NSFAS Allowances to TVET College Students

Starting in May 2024, NSFAS-funded TVET college students began receiving their allowances through direct deposits into their personal bank accounts. Students without existing bank accounts were able to select a bank for this purpose. This direct deposit method will continue for the November allowance disbursements.

Only students with confirmed funding and registration data submitted are eligible to add banking details on the myNSFAS portal, with all bank accounts undergoing NSFAS verification.

NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvalo noted that the new direct payment system has substantially reduced the cost of disbursing student allowances. Previously, each transaction cost NSFAS R22 and students R10. The shift to an internal banking system has cut transaction costs to under R1, stabilized the payment process, and reduced student complaints.
