The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial assistance to South African students, covering tuition, registration fees, and essential living costs. Students who study at one of the 50 public TVET Colleges or 26 Universities, including Unisa, can qualify.

As part of NSFAS funding, students also receive NSFAS allowances.

Unisa NSFAS Allowances For December

NSFAS divides its annual allowances into ten monthly payments. This means that Unisa students will not receive any NSFAS allowances in December 2024.

The academic year typically runs from February to November. NSFAS aligns its payment schedule with this period, ensuring that students have financial support throughout their studies.

What Unisa Students Receive from NSFAS

NSFAS-funded Unisa students are eligible for two primary allowances:

  1. Learning Materials Allowance:

    • Based on the number of registered modules.
    • First four modules: R700 per module.
    • Five or more modules: A one-time payment of R5,460.
    • Note: If the R5,460 threshold is reached, no additional funds are provided for extra modules.
    • This allowance helps cover the cost of textbooks and other study materials.
  2. Living Allowance:

    • Available to students registered for ten or more modules.
    • Includes an incidental allowance as determined by Unisa.
    • This allowance assists with general living expenses, such as food and accommodation.

In addition to these allowances, NSFAS covers tuition and registration fees for eligible Unisa students.

By understanding the NSFAS allowance structure and planning accordingly, Unisa students can make the most of their financial aid and focus on their academic pursuits.
