The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has outlined the allowance amounts university students can expect for November 2024.
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. These bursaries cover tuition, registration fees, and several allowances, including food, accommodation, and learning materials.
NSFAS Allowance Breakdown for University Students
For the 2024 academic year, university students receive an annual living allowance of R16,500, which includes R3,045 for personal care and R13,455 for meals. Additionally, they are eligible for a learning material allowance of up to R5,460.
Special provisions apply to students with disabilities, including increased allowances and additional support for learning materials. The exact allowance may also vary depending on the number of registered modules or if the student is enrolled in distance learning, such as at Unisa.
November 2024 NSFAS Allowance Payments
NSFAS disburses allowances in ten monthly instalments. In November, students will receive a meal allowance of R1,345. Those in catered accommodations will also receive a personal care allowance of around R300.
NSFAS has confirmed that universities will handle allowance payments for the remainder of 2024. This means students at any of South Africa's 26 public universities will receive their funds directly from their institution.
