NSFAS Status: What Does 'Awaiting Evaluation' Mean?

If you’ve applied for a NSFAS bursary, it’s important to regularly check your application status on the myNSFAS portal. One of the most common updates students see is “Awaiting Evaluation”. Here’s what it means and what you should do if your status is stuck on this step.

What Does Awaiting Evaluation Mean?

If your NSFAS status shows “Awaiting Evaluation”, it simply means that NSFAS is in the process of verifying all the documents and information you submitted during your application. This step ensures that your application is valid and complete before a final decision is made.

If you appealed a rejected application and now see this status, it means NSFAS is evaluating your appeal to determine whether you qualify for funding. NSFAS advises: “Continue to monitor the myNSFAS portal for appeal updates.”

Why Is My NSFAS Status Stuck on Evaluation?

- Your application may have missing documents.
- NSFAS could be experiencing delays due to the high volume of applications.
- The verification process can take time, especially during peak application periods.

While waiting can be frustrating, it’s important to remain patient. NSFAS has no fixed timeframe for when statuses update, but once your documents are checked, your status will move forward.

Important Advice for Students

- Do not delay applying to your chosen university or TVET College while waiting for NSFAS results.
- As long as your academic application is submitted on time, your NSFAS evaluation should be finalised before registration.
- Remember, “Awaiting Evaluation” is temporary and part of the normal funding process.

How to Check Your NSFAS Status

1. Visit the official NSFAS website and log in to the myNSFAS student portal.
2. Enter your username and password, then click SIGN IN.
3. Select Track Funding Progress to view your current status.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-funded initiative that provides financial assistance in the form of bursaries to academically deserving students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Under the mandate of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), NSFAS aims to break down financial barriers to higher education and promote equal opportunities for all students.
