Many students funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) are facing difficulties securing or maintaining private accommodation due to delays in receiving their accommodation allowances. This has caused anxiety and uncertainty, with some landlords reportedly threatening eviction due to non-payment. Despite the delays, NSFAS assures students that payments are forthcoming.
NSFAS acknowledges the challenges and assures students that payments are forthcoming. NSFAS Administrator Freeman Nomvalo expects a resolution by the end of May 2024.
A dedicated team has been established to address queries and expedite the processing of outstanding payments.
We were briefing that team in terms of the work that they need to do we are still going to be getting more capacity to make sure that these matters are attended to as quickly as possible.
Landlords are encouraged to cooperate by contacting NSFASAccomProv [at] nsfas.org.za (NSFASAccomProv[at]nsfas[dot]org[dot]za) with any concerns to facilitate a smooth resolution.
NSFAS is committed to tackling the root causes of the delays. This includes identifying weaknesses within their system and addressing issues related to universities submitting incomplete registration data.
By working collaboratively with accommodation providers and streamlining internal processes, NSFAS aims to prevent similar situations in the future.
Some are raising the issue of the cap but there are others where the data validation issues are at play and there are those where our inefficiencies are also at play so there are various categories.
"We all know the challenges that NSFAS has been facing and these challenges are the ones that have led to this. There's an interface handshake between ourselves and institutions in terms of the data that is necessary for validation before payments are done," said the Administrator.
