NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. These bursaries cover tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
NSFAS Confirms Who Won’t Qualify for 2025 Funding
While all eligible students are urged to apply for NSFAS funding, it's important to understand that NSFAS has strict criteria to ensure only qualifying students receive financial aid.
The Minister has confirmed that South African citizens and Permanent Residents with a combined household income of less than R350,000 per annum are eligible for the NSFAS bursary. Additionally, recipients of Sassa grants automatically qualify for funding. This bursary covers tuition, living allowances, and accommodation costs.
Who Should Not Apply for NSFAS Funding
NSFAS has specified certain groups of students who will not qualify for funding in 2025:
- Students who have already received 100% funding from non-NSFAS sources.
- Those who have already obtained an undergraduate qualification and wish to pursue a second undergraduate degree.
- Students with a certificate qualification seeking a second certificate qualification.
- Students studying at private institutions.
- Learners enrolled in qualifications not approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) or not accredited by SAQA.
Students in these categories are not eligible for government-funded bursaries or student loans.
