The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed that students who receive partial bursaries from external sources will still be eligible for NSFAS funding, provided they meet all necessary criteria.
NSFAS Bursary and Loan Coverage
NSFAS provides financial aid to thousands of students each year, covering tuition, registration fees, and allowances for accommodation, food, and learning materials. However, funding is subject to strict eligibility requirements.
With the release of its eligibility criteria, NSFAS has clarified whether students with partial external bursaries can still qualify for financial aid.
NSFAS to Cover Students with Partial Bursaries
While NSFAS does not fund students who receive full-cost loans, bursaries, or scholarships from non-NSFAS sources, it has confirmed that students with partial bursaries may still qualify.
"To the extent that these do not cover the full cost of study, NSFAS funding will be considered, provided that all eligibility criteria are met," the scheme stated.
Eligibility Criteria for Students with Partial External Bursaries
Students receiving partial external bursaries must meet the following requirements to qualify for NSFAS funding:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Be registered at an NSFAS-funded public university or TVET college.
- Have a household income of R350,000 or less per year.
- Ensure the external bursary does not exceed the full cost of study.
Additionally, both the student and their institution must inform NSFAS of the bursary within 10 days of receiving it. NSFAS will then adjust the funding accordingly, and any excess funds must be returned during the reconciliation process.
Restrictions on NSFAS Loans
NSFAS has also reiterated that students who receive full loans, bursaries, or scholarships from external sources will not qualify for an NSFAS loan.
The scheme may demand early or immediate repayment of an NSFAS loan or withhold funding if a student secures additional financial assistance for the same course, unless explicitly approved by NSFAS.
