The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) continues to support deserving South African students pursuing tertiary education. NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and loans to cover tuition, registration fees, and living expenses for students enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
Students at Unisa also qualify for NSFAS funding as it is one of the 26 public universities in South Africa.
Unisa students funded by NSFAS can expect to receive their October 2024 allowances directly from the university. This follows the government's confirmation that universities will continue to disburse NSFAS allowances until the end of the year.
NSFAS Allowances for Unisa Students
Unisa students receiving NSFAS funding are eligible for two primary allowances:
- Learning Materials Allowance: This allowance is based on the number of modules registered. Students receive R700 per module for the first four modules and a one-time payment of R5,460 for five or more modules.
- Living Allowance: Students registered for ten or more modules qualify for a living allowance. Additionally, they may be eligible for an incidental allowance as specified by Unisa.
NSFAS also covers both tuition and registration fees for eligible students.
This crucial initiative provides bursaries and student loans to deserving South African students pursuing higher education at universities and TVET colleges.
South African citizens and Permanent Residents with a combined household income of less than R350,000 per annum are eligible. Sassa grant recipients qualify automatically.
