The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has witnessed a significant surge in applications, totaling 1 936 330 by 16 February. Recognizing the high application volume, the NSFAS application deadline was extended to 15 February.
As of now, NSFAS has provisionally funded 1 000 389 applicants for the 2024 academic year. The swift funding decisions for these applicants can be largely attributed to NSFAS' collaboration with the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).
Under this agreement, NSFAS partners with Sassa to cross-reference the bursary or loan applicants with the Sassa grant database. If an applicant is found on the grant database, they are automatically provisionally funded, meeting NSFAS' household eligibility criteria of R350 000 per annum.
Out of all the applications received by NSFAS, funding was distributed to more than 790 000 individuals who depend on Sassa assistance, and around 200 000 applicants securing funding from alternative sources.
NSFAS Institution Applications
NSFAS received more than 570 000 funding applications for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college studies and over 1.3 million applications for university funding. This highlights the substantial demand for both educational pathways.
Within these sectors, NSFAS has provisionally funded over 230 000 TVET applicants and almost 760 000 university applicants. It's important to note that students can only start benefiting from NSFAS once their registration is confirmed by the institution where they are enrolled.
NSFAS Consent Form
In 2024, NSFAS urged all applicants to submit a consent form to finalize their 2024 NSFAS bursary application. Failing to submit this form may result in a delay in the confirmation of funding by NSFAS.
The consent form plays a crucial role in allowing NSFAS to verify that applicants meet the household income threshold for funding in 2024.
NSFAS emphasizes its commitment to transparency and efficiency in communicating funding decisions to applicants. Decisions are communicated as applications are processed, and additional resources have been allocated to expedite the overall process.
To enhance efficiency, the financial aid scheme has deployed 100 case workers, aiming to process all applications by the end of February 2024 and resolve any appeals by April 2024.
