South African students seeking financial assistance for their tertiary studies can now apply for NSFAS bursaries and loans for the 2025 academic year. As the application window opens, students are voicing concerns about the current process and urging NSFAS to implement improvements that ensure all eligible candidates receive the support they need to achieve their educational goals.

Applications for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for the 2025 academic year officially opened on 20 September 2024. This presents a golden opportunity for South African students to secure financial assistance for their tertiary education journey.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for NSFAS funding, applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and meet specific financial criteria.

  • Bursaries: Households must have an annual income of less than R350,000. If the applicant has a disability, the income limit increases to R600,000.
  • Student Loans: Households must have an annual income between R350,001 and R600,000.

What Does NSFAS Cover?

NSFAS provides comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Tuition and registration fees
  • Food allowances
  • Accommodation allowances
  • Learning materials

SASCO strongly encourages all eligible young people and learners to seize this opportunity. We call on our members, chapters, and affiliated organisations to assist in spreading awareness about these application venues and to provide support to prospective applicants.

The government has implemented several improvements to streamline the application process for students. However, the South African Students Congress (SASCO) remains concerned about ongoing administrative challenges.

To address these issues, SASCO is calling for:

  • A comprehensive audit of NSFAS
  • Advanced technological solutions
  • Enhanced communication channels
  • A clear framework for the new loan scheme
  • Increased accountability and transparency
  • Establishment of provincial offices and university-based appeal committees

These issues have caused significant distress to students, often leading to delays in funding disbursements, confusion over eligibility criteria, and in some cases, students being unable to continue their studies due to financial constraints.

SASCO expressed confidence in the leadership of Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane to effectively address these critical issues and ensure the well-being of students.

"We believe that under Minister Nkabane's stewardship, these critical issues can be addressed effectively; prioritising the interests and well-being of students."
