The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced plans to pay R3.7 billion upfront to universities in January 2024. This significant investment will ensure that students, including those enrolled in Health Science programmes, receive their NSFAS allowances promptly at the start of the 2025 academic year.

NSFAS provides comprehensive financial aid to deserving South African students enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. This funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as various allowances.

The funding is intended to cover personal care, living expenses, travel, books, and accommodation. All impacted institutions will be notified by NSFAS of any changes to the payment dates or other matters that may arise.

The special provision for Health Science students is due to the earlier commencement of their academic programs compared to other fields of study. By providing upfront funding, NSFAS aims to alleviate financial burdens and facilitate a smooth start to the academic year.

NSFAS Funding for TVET Colleges

NSFAS will also pay 20% of each TVET college's 2025 tuition allocation upfront. This amounts to a total of over R640 million, ensuring that TVET students have access to quality education.

The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education has urged institutions to submit accurate student registration data to NSFAS to prevent delays in allowance payments. Additionally, the committee has called on the Department of Higher Education and Training to expedite the process of standardizing allowances for TVET college and university students.

The committee recommended that issues emanating from the 2024 registration period should not continue in 2025. These issues included delays in processing applications for funding, disbursements of allowances, processing of appeals and matters related to private accommodation.

NSFAS Decentralization and Accommodation Program

NSFAS is actively working on decentralizing its operations by establishing regional offices in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. These offices will also serve Limpopo, North West, and Mpumalanga. The scheme aims to finalize a complete roadmap for this initiative by the end of November 2024.

An Eastern Cape NSFAS office will also be established along with a Western Cape office, which will also serve the Northern Cape.

"This initiative is aimed at enhancing accessibility and efficiency in service delivery for NSFAS beneficiaries across the country," said NSFAS.

Furthermore, NSFAS has concluded its accommodation pilot project and is transitioning to the NSFAS Accredited Student Accommodation Program. The scheme plans to discontinue direct accommodation disbursements to students and instead make payments directly to accredited or recognized accommodation providers by 2026.
