The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) plays a crucial role in supporting higher education access for many South African students. NSFAS funding, which is in the form of bursaries and loans, goes beyond covering tuition fees as allowances for student needs are included.

This article focuses on how NSFAS allowances will work in January 2025.

NSFAS Allowances For January 2025

NSFAS typically disburses allowances over 10 months of the academic year. January is therefore excluded from this payment schedule and there will be no NSFAS allowance payments for January 2025.

The academic year generally commences in February and concludes in November and NSFAS aligns their NSFAS allowance plans with the academic year.

How NSFAS Allowances Will Be Paid In 2025

NSFAS has not yet finalized the payment methods for 2025. In 2024, university allowances were typically paid through institutions, while TVET college allowances were disbursed directly to student bank accounts.

How Much NSFAS Allowance Will Be For 2025

The specific allowance amounts for 2025 have not been announced. The Higher Education Minister, Nobuhle Nkabane, is expected to provide details during the state of readiness speech for the 2025 academic year.

NSFAS has already disbursed R3.7 billion to universities in January 2025 to ensure timely allowance payments, particularly for students in Health Science programs with earlier start dates. This represents 10% of the projected R37 billion budget for the 2025 academic year.

Similarly, NSFAS will allocate 20% of tuition funds, exceeding R640 million, to TVET colleges by 10 January 2025.
